Town Information and History

Nyah Township - The township of Nyah, on the banks of the Murray River was formed as the "Taverner Community Village Settlement" in the 1890s and has a population today of approximately 490. The railway line from Swan Hill to Nyah was part of the Mildura Line extension, linking the town of Swan Hill, an important regional center along the Murray River, to Nyah, a small rural community to the north. The extension played a significant role in supporting the growing agricultural industry in the Mallee region by providing an efficient transport route for goods such as grain, wool, and livestock.

The towns of Nyah and Nyah West, around 20 minutes north from Swan Hill, are the gateway to some magnificent natural riverside bush and support the region's agricultural businesses, including fresh fruit and vegetables, wool and wine.

The popular Nyah Recreation Reserve is a spacious, shady camping ground perfect for the caravan. What it lacks in creature comforts is more than made up for in unspoilt riverfront views, fishing, birdlife and pleasant walks.

The more adventurous can head out in the 4WD or pack a tent to claim your private spot along 7km of rugged riverfront in the nearby Nyah Vinifera State Forest. Just the ticket for a bit of well-earned rest and relaxation.
